3 held for illegal sand mining in Colvale, six canoes seized

Officials of the mines department along with Mapusa Police and Coastal Security Police raided a sand mining site in Colvale and detained three persons and seized six canoes involved in sand extraction, early rnWednesday morning.

The raiding team swooped on the accused and caught them red-handed while nearing the river bank with their canoes. Sand mining is banned in the State.  
The three accused “ Satyanarayan Ram, Santosh Kairol, both from UP, and Prakash Lamani from Karnataka “ were arrested under the Minor Mineral Concession Act and later released on bail.  
The six seized canoes were later handed over to the Captain of Ports department.  
Sudhir Mandrekar and Sankalp Dessai of the mines department along with the police conducted the raid.
