Two four-wheelers and a two-wheeler were partially damaged in a fire at Driver Hill in Vasco on Friday afternoon.
Plumes of smoke were noticed by a resident, Smita Borker, from afar while she was returning home from work. She then alerted the neighborhood and also the fire station. “Decorations and bamboos used in pandals which were dumped in an open place had caught fire. The place is often used for parking of vehicles. The fire damaged two four-wheelers and a two-wheeler parked nearby.”
“Many vehicles parked there were removed immediately as fire began to spread to dry grass in the area,” said Borker.
Though the cause of the fire is unclear, locals suspect fire at a garbage dump nearby may have spread to the bamboos and decorations.
Three small fire tenders rushed to the spot as the large fire tenders could not enter the area due to the narrow access road and two-wheelers parked on either side of the road.
When contacted, Fire Officer Vishwas Ashtekar said, “We had turned up on time but the obstacles on the road prevented the fire tender from reaching the spot earlier. There were a lot of vehicles parked near the site of the fire mishap. We, however, saved the remaining vehicles from getting engulfed in the fire. We have not estimated the losses as of now.”
Another local, Mandar Bandekar, said some people had dumped garbage and may have set the garbage dump ablaze, which could have led to the fire.
