Goa Police’s Traffic Cell booked 315 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol in the offensive against drunken driving on Friday.
The operation was jointly conducted by the Goa Traffic Police and the District Police at nearly 100 locations and was personally monitored by DGP Dr Muktesh Chander, and IGP Jaspal Singh.
The vehicles and the documents of the violators were seized in all the 315 cases.
Pointing out that despite publicizing the drive in advance, over 300 cases were booked, the Traffic Police said in a statement that more such offensives against drunken driving will be conducted without any pre-announcement of the date and time.
All the cases booked on Friday night are being filed before courts in their respective jurisdictions. An officer of the rank of Police Inspector will personally appear with an assistant public prosecutor in those cases where drivers were caught with alcohol content of more than 200 mg/100 ml, the statement said, adding that maximum punishment of imprisonment and suspension of license will be pursued.
In one case at Porvorim, a tempo carrying 15 loaded LPG cylinders was seized when the driver was found under the influence of alcohol.
“Such irresponsible drivers could cause major catastrophic accidents due to cylinder blasts endangering human lives. The police will seek maximum punishment and cancellation of license,” the police said, adding that the petroleum company will be notified requesting action against the concerned LPG dealer.
Another case highlighted by the police was of a Mumbai-bound passenger bus which was checked at Margao.
The driver of the bus, which was carrying 20 passengers with another 16 yet to board, was found under the influence of alcohol. The driver has been booked and maximum punishment will be pursued in the court, the police said.
