Teen drowns, 2 rescued in Calangute

MAPUSA

A teenager drowned while two others were rescued off Calangute beach late Thursday evening, on a day when the tourism department had issued an advisory cautioning tourists not to venture into the rough sea.

Calangute police said the body of the deceased youth, Vishwas Anand Naik (19), a native of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was found at Baga beach on Friday morning.

According to information provided by the police, a group of eight friends had arrived in Goa for vacation. On Thursday, the blue waters of the ocean beckoned the youth who rushed into the sea for a swim at around 6.30 pm.

Suddenly, a large wave pulled three from the group into the choppy waters. Lifeguards on duty rushed to the aid of the struggling youth and managed to save two.

After registering a missing report, Calangute police along with the Drishti Marine personnel launched a search operation along the coast.

At 9 am on Friday, police found a body on Baga beach which was confirmed to be of Vishwas Naik.

The body was identified by family members of the deceased and has been sent for post mortem examination.
