Goa’s Excise Commissioner Narayan Gad claimed that the State rebounded after the Covid-hit financial year of 2021-22 with a nearly 33% jump in excise revenues in the following 2022-23 fiscal.
Gad said, the State’s excise revenue jumped to Rs 865 crore in the just concluded financial year as against Rs 650 crore in the previous 2021-22 fiscal.
He claimed that strict enforcement and plugging of revenue leakages were some measures which aided the buoyancy in revenues. Strict vigilance at the border check-posts was another factor he highlighted.
In a revenue generating tweak in excise licencing rules, an amendment made in October last year has permitted liquor licences to be assigned to third parties.
However, the assignees have to pay 20% of the original licence fee to the department.
Gad said, in the last four days, surveillance had been upped in the Calangute area where liquor shops were raided and high-end liquor worth Rs 3.5 lakh seized for lack of documentation and transportation permits.
