Acting swiftly, Anjuna Police arrested four Georgian nationals in connection with house break-in and theft and recovered gold ornaments and cash all worth Rs 9 lakh late Wednesday evening.

Police have also seized seven mobile phones, two SIM cards, a rented i10 car used to commit the offence and equipment used to break into the house such as a hydraulic cutter, grinder, pickaxe, hammer, pliers, screw drivers etc.

A Mapusa court remanded the accused to eight days police custody.

Police investigation has revealed that the four suspects, who hail from Georgia in the erstwhile Soviet Union and presently residing in a flat in Arpora, came down to Goa on March 8 and since then have been involved in house break-ins.

Anjuna PI Navlesh Dessai informed that Maria Fernandes of Bamon-vaddo, Siolim, lodged a complaint on March 11 that some unknown persons effected entry into her house sometime between 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm by breaking the back door and decamped with gold ornaments and cash all worth more than Rs 9 lakh.

Following the complaint, police studied CCTV footages obtained from one of the shops opposite the house and found the suspects travelling in a car.  “One of the shops opposite the house that was burgled had CCTV camera. Although we could identify only the colour and the make of the car, it gave us a vital lead,” PI Dessai said.

Police also informed that a mechanic in the area had heard the alleged suspects speak in Russian.

After obtaining vital clues police intensified patrolling and finally nabbed the gang of four Georgian nationals “ Konstantine Chkhaidze (46), Ivra Pirveli (42), Lasha Gurchiani (46) and Irakli Tamliani (33) “ late Wednesday evening.

“We will continue to interrogate them to find if they were involved in any more crimes,” the Anjuna PI said.

Police may also initiate action against the flat owner where the suspects were presently residing.

All the four suspects have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and presently lodged in police lockup. PSI Vishwajeet Chodankar is investigating the case.
