Porvorim could well have as many as nine traffic signals along a 5-km stretch of the highway, with the State government accepting a proposal from the Police Traffic Cell to install four new traffic signals in addition to the five existing traffic signals along the route.
Calangute Police Traffic Cell Inspector Brendon D’Souza said the traffic along the Mapusa-Panaji highway has increased sharply in recent years.
“We have suggested to the government to install traffic signals near DIET Junction, Sai Service Junct
Porvorim could well have as many as nine traffic signals along a 5-km stretch of the highway, with the State government accepting a proposal from the Police Traffic Cell to install four new traffic signals in addition to the five existing traffic signals along the route.
Calangute Police Traffic Cell Inspector Brendon D’Souza said the traffic along the Mapusa-Panaji highway has increased sharply in recent years.
“We have suggested to the government to install traffic signals near DIET Junction, Sai Service Junct
ion, entrance of Mandovi bridge and Malim Junction. The government has accepted my proposal and has started work to install traffic signals at these four sites,” said PI D’Souza.
“Once these additional traffic signals are installed and become operational, the Mapusa-Panaji stretch of the NH 17 will have traffic signals at all strategic locations, facilitating smooth movement of vehicular traffic and reducing the chances of accidents,” said D’Souza.
At present, traffic signals are located near the JMJ hospital, Holy Family Church, O’Coqueiro Circle, Delfino Hypermart and Gauri Petrol Pump.
When contacted, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the stretch of road between Alto-Porvorim Bazaar and Mandovi Bridge has become an accident-prone zone.
“Accidents along this stretch have become a regular feature since no speed limits for traffic are in force. Hence, it is absolutely necessary to install traffic signals at all traffic junctions on this stretch of the highway.”
“Once the traffic signals are set up near DIET Junction, Sai Service Junction, entrance of Mandovi bridge and Malim Junction, there will be a substantial reduction in road mishaps.”
“There is also a need to install CCTV cameras at all these traffic signals to keep a check on violation of traffic rules by motorists. A better traffic management is of utmost importance for public safety,” said Khaunte.
