PANAJI: Goa Children's Court on Thursday sentenced artist and art teacher Kanhaiya Naik from Marcel to four years rigorous imprisonment and has imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh in the December 2011 case of sexually assaulting a 17 year-old female student.
The young victim had set herself ablaze on July 24, 2012 at her residence. She later succumbed to her injuries on July 27 while being treated at a hospital.
The offence occurred on December 29, 2011, when Naik picked up the victim from her residence on the pretext of guiding her about her career. He then took her to his flat at Ribandar. Naik clicked photographs of the girl and also molested her.
It was only on December 31, 2011 that the incident came to light. The victim's mother spotted bruises on her body and upon questioning, the girl disclosed the incident to her mother.
The girl and her family were under tremendous pressure and refrained from filing a formal police complaint.
An FIR was finally registered against Naik at Panaji Police Station upon a complaint filed by an NGO, Children's Rights of Goa.
Naik has been convicted under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with the intention outrage her modesty ) of IPC and Section 8 (2) (sexual assault on a child) of Goa Children's Act, 2003.
