SANGUEM
Five farmers who had been in the forefront of the agitation against the IIT at Sanguem have received notices from the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Sanguem over a complaint lodged against them by State through Police Inspector of the Sanguem police station.
The notices are issued under Section 107 of Criminal Procedure Code which is a preventive action filed against persons who are likely to disturb peace and tranquillity through their actions.
The SDM is empowered to take personal bond from the persons charged under Section 107 with directions to maintain peace for a period of six months.
The swift move by Sanguem police is seen more as a measure to silence the voice of the farmers against their purported move to oppose the IIT at Sanguem.
Those who received the notices are Maria Cruz, Melita, Anifa Mascarenhas, Pedro Vaz and Sanjay Mapari informed Constancio Mascarenhas who is heading the agitation against the IIT project on pristine land at Sanguem.
Meanwhile, Mascarenhas was sceptical over inaction by Sanguem Police with respect to the complaint filed by them against the IIT supporters.
On Friday, the demarcation process for the proposed IIT project at Sanguem began under heavy police protection.
An army of men in uniform was stationed at the entry point of the proposed site to keep at bay any protesters planning to disturb the survey operations.
Incidentally, no one from the farming community, which has been opposing the project since the last one month, was present at the site on Friday.
