MAPUSA
The Mapusa Municipal Council has selected five spots to install traffic signals in the city and an agreement has been signed with an agency Om Sai Creations to instal these traffic signals.
According to the new agreement, the city would get traffic signals at five major places, including Court junction, Karaswada junction, Gandhi chowk, zebra crossing opposite water supply department and Aldona bus stand junction, stated MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal.
MMC Chief Officer Amitesh Shirvaikar said that an agreement has been signed with Om Sai Creations regarding the installation of traffic signals.
“The agreement was supposed to be signed last week, but due to technical issues, the process got delayed,” said Shirvaikar, adding that the agreement was signed on Thursday and the traffic signals will be installed and active in a fortnight.
The traffic signals at the Court junction in Mapusa are inactive since the past few months, and the earlier agency which installed them, had declined to offer its services in the future.
After that, the MMC had assigned the project to another agency, but the traffic signal alignment installed by that agency was incorrect. So, the services of the said agency were suspended.
Hence, this project got delayed for a long time, and due to the absence of traffic signal system at the main junction in the city, there was traffic congestion most of the time.
The traffic police had difficulty in handling the traffic and also had to face the criticism from the motorists. The traffic police had submitted many proposals regarding the installation of traffic signals to the MMC.
