Fifty-five houses at Baina beach will be demolished on Tuesday, while one house may be spared after the house owner reportedly produced documents and NOC from church authorities to prove occupancy.
It may be recalled that in a last-minute relief to the affected residents, the demolition of 56 houses at Baina beach scheduled on Sept 15 were kept in abeyance, following directives from collector.
Sources said late Monday evening, all the houses got notices from the deputy collector that the 55 ho
uses did not have an NOC from church authorities and hence the stay had been rejected. The notices were served to all houses by a talathi from the Mamlatdar's office and on Tuesday, the order for demolition with a new date fixed for September 26 was ready in the municipal council. One house, however, is likely to be saved after the owner reportedly produced the relevant documents, claimed Mormugao's Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar.
When contacted, Amonkar, who had been crucial in supporting the people for many years, claimed that injustice had been meted out to these residents who did not get the opportunity to fight their case.
"After the demolition was stayed considering the pending cases put for regularisation, we thought they would get justice. There are many cases of regularisation of illegal structures, but till date no one has got hearing as a special committee to handle these cases is yet to be appointed." Councillor Murari Bandekar alleged all the people of Baina are living in fear as the municipal council is determined to clear the land and gift it to a builder.
"The Laxmi temple is the venue for an ongoing Navratri function and I hope they will be sympathetic and stop the demolition of that structure," he added.
