Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday disclosed that Covid had claimed the lives of seven children even as 16,246 children between 0 to 17 years are already infected with the virus in the first two waves of the pandemic.
Addressing media, Sawant said this amounts to 11 per cent of infected population and that all the seven who succumbed were suffering from co-morbidities.
He said Goa government has sought permission from the Central government to use 1 lakh of the 2.8 lakh odd surplus doses available with the State government which have been allotted for above 45 age group on loan basis.
In addition govt has requested for 15 lakh vaccine doses from 2 private companies, Sawant said.
He also disclosed that the State government is expecting their quota of second lot of 36,000 vaccines in the first week of June. Spot registration will also commence once vaccines are available.
Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police and SDPO, Panaji Uttam Raut Desai passed away on Tuesday evening following a long battle with Covid-19.
Sources informed that he had undergone an open heart surgery two months ago. Unfortunately, within a month of the surgery, he contracted Covid and was in a critical condition at GMC for almost a month.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
