72.99% cast votes in four wards of Bardez

Election in four wards of Bardez passed off peacefully with an average of 72.99 percent electorate exercising their franchise on Saturday. rnPolling was held in ward 1 each in Bastora and Anjuna-Caisua and ward 8 and 9 in Penha-da-Franca, as elections to these wards were postponed after a High Court order.

the goan I networkrMAPUSArrThe polling which began at 8 in the morning ended at 5 pm, with a total of 2,908 voters casting their ballot out of 4,300 voters in the four wards. rAs many as 1,491 females came out to vote as opposed to 1,417 males, indicating rthat more women came out to vote than their male counterparts. rWard 1 of Bastora registered a highest turnout of 80.19 percent while combined polling in the two wards in Penha de Franca was lowest clocking a voting of 63.49 percent. rIn Anjuna-Caisua voting was 75.30 percent. The election passed off peacefully with no untoward incident reported from anywhere. r“Voting was conducted in a very peaceful manner. No untoward incidents were reported from any of the booths in the two wards,” said Dashrat Gawas, Returning Officer I for Penha-da-Franca panchayat. rThe Returning Officers for Bastora and Anjuna-Caisua also said that polling ended on a peaceful note. rCounting of the votes of all wards of the three panchayats “ Bastora, Anjuna-Caisua and Penha de Franca will be taken up on Sunday. rCounting of votes for the three panchayats will be taken simultaneously at 8 am at the Boxing Hall in Government Sports Complex, Peddem. rThe fate of some key sarpanchas, former sarpanchas and senior panch members in the three pancahyats -- Pratisha Mayenkar (sarpanch, Bastora), Rajan Noroji (former sarpanch, Bastora), Pratima Govekar (sarpanch, Anjuna-Caisua), rSavio Almeida (former sarpanch, Anjuna-Caisua), Surendra Govekar (senior panch, Anjuna-Caisua), Lavino Rebello (senior panch, Anjuna-Caisua) etc will be decided on Sunday.

The election to Wards 8 and 9 of Penha-de-Franca Panchayat passed off peacefully without any untoward incident on Saturday. rnVoters turned out in large number to exercise their franchise.
