The Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation has completed about 75% of the work of the first phase of the Porvorim sewerage project, while work on the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has begun at Gaunswada-Mapusa.

Speaking to The Goan, SIDCGL Deputy General Manager (engineering) Ganesh Kodlekere said the first phase of sewerage work covers the areas of Defence Colony, Vidyanagar, Sainagar, Krantinagar, Pundaliknagar, Housing Board Colony and Police Colony on Porvorim plateau.

“The network of laying 27 kms pipeline in these areas had commenced on June 20, 2015 and so far, 20 kms network has been completed and the work on the portion of the NH17 from Rotary garden to Jivottam Muth, Service Road and main road of Pundaliknagar is pending,” he informed.

“Once the required No-Objection Certificates are received from the department concerned, the pending work will be undertaken. The work is expected to be completed before the monsoon,” added Kodlekere.

Kodlekere informed that 500 of the 750 manholes have been completed and added that each house/building would be connected to the sewerage system.

“The Sewerage Treatment Plant will be set up at Gaunswada-Mapusa and the work has been started. Initially, it was decided to set up the STP at Kadamba bus depot. Since some residents of Porvorim objected to the STP, the government had to shift it to Gaunswada, which is at a distance of 8 kms from Porvorim.”

“Now, additional 8 kms long pipeline from Porvorim to Mapusa will have to be laid for the carriage of sewage and it will take another one-and-half years to complete the entire project,” said Kodlekere.

Talkar’s liquor store may be new, but is facing closure very soon after the Supreme Court order in December 2016 barring the sale of alcohol along national and state highways across the country and also within a distance of…
