Maintaining the heat against illegal sand mining in Salcete and the State, taluka Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar and officials of the Department of Mines descended at
Corjuem-Curtorim on Thursday and attached around nine trucks near the sand mining site.
While seven trucks were all loaded with the sand, two other trucks were parked near the site, the Salcete Mamlatdar told The Goan after the operation.
Acting on a tip off that rampant illegal sand mining is carried out at Corjuem-Curtorim despite the ban, the Salcete Mamlatdar along with the Department of Mines conducted a raid at the site, only to find nine trucks parked in the area, with seven trucks laden
with sand.
The Salcete taluka told The Goan that the Maina-Curtorim police has been told to take custody of the trucks. He said the raid was planned at Curtorim following complaints that illegal sand mining was going on at the site unabated.
“When the team reached the site, a motorised boat, which is involved in
the sand mining, made good its escape. But, we found the nine trucks parked near the site which had stored
the sand,” Mamlatdar
Prataprao said.
To a question, Mamlatdar Prataprao said the authorities had planned a series of raids in Salcete against
illegal sand mining, but the officials were preoccupied at Curtorim throughout
the day.
