This was informed in a press conference called by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
PMUY was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016 with the objective of ensuring that poorer sections of society have clean LPG fuel for cooking so that they don’t have to rely on polluting source of energy like cow dung cakes to cook food.
Vaibhav Bhagat, senior sales manager, HPCL said, “We launched this scheme in Goa on June 1, 2016. Ever since then, 965 BPL households in Goa have got a LPG connection under this scheme.”
This means that HPCL, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) combined have given benefit under PMUY to 965 households in Goa.
Under PMUY, deposit-free LPG connection is provided by oil companies to BPL families. The central government understands that a large number of poor BPL households are not able to go for LPG cylinders because they cannot afford the initial deposit payable of Rs 1,600. To deal with this, to take a LPG connection, a BPL family can take a loan of Rs 1,600 towards deposit of cylinder and regulator. This loan will be paid by the central government. If the BPL household does not have money for first refill, then loan can be provided for that too, but this loan has to be paid by the household itself.
The subsequent refills will anyway have to be paid by the household. DT Patil, regional manager, HPCL, said, “Under this scheme, in North Goa HPCL has provided 324 connections, BPCL to 262 households and IOC has provided to 66 households.
