Seems utopian right? But that’s what is planned at the court junction in Mapusa.
The Mapusa Municipal Council’s Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee along with the council’s Chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar and officials of RTO and traffic cell inspected the Mapusa court junction for almost two hours to discuss plans to improve it.
“Once fully developed, the court junction will be a prototype. It can be replicated for development of all the other key junctions at various points in the town,” said Roland Martins, Coordinator of GOACAN, who is part of the road safety and traffic management committee.
The development of the model roundabout may take time but to start with, the traffic management committee will ensure that basic signages are put in place so that there is smooth movement of traffic at the busy junction.
“We have asked the officials to install appropriate signages as per specifications and paint zebra crossings with stop line to facilitate smooth pedestrian crossing at the court junction,” Martins said.
In attempt to make the junction a model one, all debris and junk electricity poles by the side of the roads near the junction will be removed. The open drains will be covered with concrete slabs and all the corners near the junction will be cleared from hindrances.
The authorities concerned will work out the median of the junction which will sport a high mast lamp along with a four-side clock.
The present motorcycle pilot and rickshaw stand will be shifted and bus bays will be relocated to prevent congestion near the junction.
“We will monitor and follow up with the MMC on progress of the work at the junction every Tuesday,” said Ratnapal Salkar, chairman
of the traffic management committee.
