The Fatorda police station - which hit the headlines from day one after social activist lodged his first complaint against TCP Minister and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai -- was mooted with the avowed objective of keeping the burglars at bay and to ensure women security.
A week after the police station was inaugurated by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar in the presence of TCP Minister and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Dussehra day, no burglary has been reported in Fatorda and the neighbouring housing b
oard till date. However, the police station has registered two molestation cases in a week's time, including the case registered against the resident of Orlim for allegedly passing outrageous comments on the women coming out of the office of the TCP Minister during the weekend.
If Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Navlesh Desai is to be believed, the police station has received only three cognizable cases, as many as six non-cognizable cases, besides four cases of accidents, including an accident causing serious injury. "In both the molestation cases, the police were quick to nab the culprits and produced them before the court. Investigations are underway and the police would soon charge sheet the accused persons," PI Navlesh said, adding "the non-cognizable cases pertain to petty incidents of assault resulting in minor hurt involving families".
During the week, the police were called to maintain law and order at the SGPDA wholesale fish market to stop the retail sale of fish in the market and for bandobast duties at the Nehru Stadium for the U-17 World cup Germany-Costa Rica match.
The Fatorda police station, however, has now come under the scanner of the South Goa Sessions court after social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues knocked the Judiciary over the police failure to register a case against the Fatorda MLA and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai.
The complaint lodged by Adv Aires Rodrigues was the first complaint received by the Fatorda police station after the station was inaugurated by the Chief Minister. Till date, however, the police has neither registered a case nor has replied back to the complainant on his request to book a case against the local MLA. However, based on a petition received from the social activist, South Goa Sessions Judge B P Deshpande has now directed the district police chief Arvind Gawas, IPS and the Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Navlesh Desai to file their reply in the court on October 13.
Apparently referring to the complaint lodged against him by social activist Adv Aires Rodrigues, the TCP Minister commented on Sunday: "Fatorda is in the news again for a different reason. We had formed the police station to provide security for the women. Fatorda police station is not new to strange news. But, security of women is of paramount importance for us".
While the police department had sanctioned four PSIs for the Fatorda police station, only two PSIs has taken over charge till date. Sources in the know said the department should depute the remaining PSIs as per the sanctioned strength.
