Taking up cudgels for the beleaguered tribal vendors, AAP women's wing of the on Monday requested the Margao municipality to act with a humanistic way towards the tribal and Goan vendors, designate street vendors' zones as mandated by law and start implementing the green markets at the earliest.
Led by Rajashree Nagarsekar, the AAP delegation led the beleaguered tribal vendors to the municipality, only to find Chairperson, CO Agnelo Fernandes and others conspicuous by their absence. The tribal
women and the AAP leaders then headed to the tribal sub-office, but the deputy director and other officials were not found around.
"These tribal vendors undergo lot of hardships to grow the said produce and come all the way from their respective remote villages to sell the same in Margao. They sell this produce outside the road facing harsh weather conditions. Their small earnings enable them to sustain their poor livelihood and people of Margao are lucky to enjoy their organically grown fruits and vegetables, which is healthy and affordable," Rajashree added.
She pointed out that the Parliament had passed a law by which the local panchayats and municipalities were empowered to make available street vendors zones.
"Successive State govs too announced grandiose plans of starting green markets all over Goa, that too failed to take off till date. The action of the MMC is contrary to our ethos of Goem, Goemkar and Goemkarponn, which slogan is being misused by the so-called Goemkar party for political gains whose leader is presently the Agriculture Minister," she said.
