Action comes a day after heated exchange between activist and Mormugao civic body chairperson

A company on Saturday afternoon removed two trucks that had been parked for several months along the congested road near Vasco Market.
The action came a day after a heated exchange had erupted between Vasco-based social activist Nazir Khan and the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Girish Borker regarding the presence of the trucks at the site.
Locals expressed relief after the trucks were finally removed, saying the area had become a traffic bottleneck and a dumping ground due to the abandoned vehicles.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Borker said the MMC had written to the company, requesting their cooperation to clear the trucks from the site. “The company responded positively and assured us that they would begin the process by Monday and complete it by Wednesday. To everyone’s surprise, they cleared the trucks even earlier, which is commendable. The area will now be cleaned, and steps would be taken to prevent future encroachments on public roads” Borker said.
Earlier on Friday, Khan had hit out at the MMC over its ongoing drive to tow away abandoned and scrapped vehicles, accusing the council of selectively targeting the poor while allegedly sparing vehicles belonging to big companies.
Speaking to reporters, Khan had questioned why two trucks on the already congested road near the Vasco market had not been towed despite lying abandoned for months.
Khan said he had been raising the issue with authorities since February.
