CANACONA
Heavy rains in Canacona, which received the highest rainfall on Sunday, have filled the Chapoli Dam to capacity, causing it to overflow on Sunday afternoon. The overflow has also activated the Chapoli river.
The dam, which is the only source of drinking water and irrigation for Canacona, began to overflow at its concrete spillway after reaching a water level of 38.75 RL (Reduced Level) in its reservoir.
Sources said the water level was around 38.50 RL on Saturday evening, but continuous rain across the taluka and the dam’s catchment area helped the dam fill up quickly. By Sunday afternoon, water had started overflowing, and by evening, the spillway was in full flow. The dam is 500 metres long with a catchment area of about 14 sq km. It has a storage capacity of 1,122 HaM, which is around 8 million cubic metres.
