Absconding jeweller held in Karnataka, remanded to 2-day police custody

An absconding jeweller Bhimappa Chalwadi, wanted in connection with an alleged cheating case involving gold ornaments was arrested by Mormugao police from Hospet in Karnataka after an intensive search aided by technical surveillance.

The accused, Bhimappa Yallappa Chalwadi (35), a resident of Shop No. 2, near Siddaruth Math, Headland Sada, Mormugao, had been evading arrest in connection with Crimes registered at Mormugao Police Station under Sections 316(5) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police tracked down the accused to Hospet, Karnataka, with the help of technical inputs. A team from Mormugao Police Station apprehended him and brought him to Goa.

Chalwadi was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Vasco, which remanded him to two days of police custody for further investigation.

The arrest comes amid allegations that the jeweller had cheated several customers by allegedly collecting their gold ornaments on the promise of arranging loans and later failing to return the pledged jewellery. 

Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
