Accounts dept refusal irks Caitu

The currency bug hit Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva as well on Wednesday as the government accounts department refused to accept currency notes in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

MARGAO:
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when Caitu’s nephew had approached the Salcete Mamlatdar to pay the purchase amount in respect of a mundkar case. When Caitu and his nephew went to the accounts department to make the payments, the officials point blank refused to accept the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes on the plea that the government has scrapped these currency notes.
An agitated Caitu is believed to have questioned the accounts officials to produce the government circular, only to be told that they are referring to some media reports.
Left with no option, the Benaulim MLA knocked the doors of the District Collector, Swapnil Naik, who too expressed his helplessness in addressing his concern. “I only wanted to know from the district collector how the accounts department have refused to accept the currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 without any government circular”, he later told the media, while demanding to know whether the government officials have been directed by the higher ups not to accept these currency notes.
