MARGAO
The Goa police was left red-faced on Thursday after an accused, a native of Belgaum, who was remanded to five days judicial custody, made good his escape from Margao police custody located in the South Goa district headquarters.
District police chief, SP Arvind Gawas, IPS was quick to initiate action against the erring police constable Vishal Desai, as he placed him under suspension for negligence and dereliction of duties.
The incident occurred around 1.30 pm when the accused, who was remanded to five-day judicial custody by a Margao court, was just being brought out by the police constable to escort him to the Colvale jail.
Margao Police station in-charge, PI C L Patil told the media that the Margao police has earmarked two police constables to take charge of two accused when they are taken to the Judicial lock-up. "A local court had remanded Baburao to five days judicial custody around noon. We were waiting for another accused, who was still in the court, to escort them together to the Colvale jail when police constable Vishal decided to take Baburao to Colvale. The police constable brought the accused in the corridor and returned back to the office to take some documents, only to find Baburao missing," PI Patil said.
The accused is believed to have made good his escape from the rear side of the police headquarters since the main entry is manned by an armed policeman.
Terming the action of the police constable as sheer negligence, PI Patil said he has moved a report to the higher police authorities for necessary action against the erring constable.
The Margao police has registered a case against accused Baburao for escaping from police custody.
The accused was arrested by the Margao police after a mobile phone was recovered from his possession. PI Patil said the accused was posing himself as a tailor.
