Even as the accused in the British woman rape case has been remanded to two days police custody, investigations have revealed that the accused had conducted a recce of the South Goa Sessions Court building to escape from police custody.

Senior police officials informed that the under trial did not just enter the toilet located on the ground floor of the building and made good his escape.

Since the accused Ramachandra Yallappa was regularly brought to the Sessions Court for trial in the rape case, he had inspected the toilet as a possible escape route from police custody.

“The accused had found the weak iron grill of the toilet ventilator as a possible escape route. And, on the day of the incident, he went to the toilet not once, but twice under the pretext of stomach upset, completely hoodwinking the escort party to make good his escape,” a senior police official said.

After the incident, the Court officials have now got the toilet ventilator strengthened by replacing the iron grill, which was bent by the accused to escape from the toilet.

Meanwhile, the Goa police, as well as the government, has heaved a sigh of relief over the arrest of the accused from Karnataka as the British embassy was constantly following up the matter with the local authorities and the police.
