The Congress party on Wednesday demanded that the South Goa District Collector haul up the Margao Municipal Chief Officer for disobeying the directives of the Disaster Management Cell to raze down the unsafe building housing a showroom.
Congress leader Savio Coutinho charged that the local leaders first promote illegal activities, and when there is some calamity, they turn tables and try to project themselves as innocent.
“The illegal showroom inaugurated by the local MLA Digamber Kamat along with MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar is a glaring example of how our representatives allegedly promoted an illegal activity in premises declared unsafe by the very same Council,” he said.
He added, “The very fact that the District Collector’s order (which incidentally happens to be the office of the Disaster Management Cell) is disobeyed by the Chief Officer is enough evidence to prove who is behind the inaction against the showroom in the unsafe building.”
He further charged that the technical sections’ opinion of sealing the premises was overruled by the Chief Officer, who felt it appropriate to issue a show-cause notice for the cancellation of the trade license instead.
