Social activist Xencor Polgi on Saturday afternoon dumped three sacks full of empty beer bottles outside the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and demanded increased police patrolling to curb anti-social activities.
Polgi collected the empty beer bottles from various locations at Sada.
"We have made several requests to authorities on the illegalities, but they seem to be silent on all these activities and do nothing about it. We have been conducting so many cleanliness drives and we now see that there are empty beer bottles all over and despite a series of cleanliness drives, the numbers don't seem to reduce,” said Polgi.
“These beer bottles are found outside schools, religious structures and even government offices having security and this is extremely shameful,” said Polgi.
"We have requested the MMC and councillors to have dust bins at regular intervals so that the people can dump their garbage in the bins. But in the absence of bins, miscreants discard their garbage and these empty bottles all over the road.”
He accused MMC councillors of failing to take the initiative to clean up the area or direct their workers to clear the garbage.
“The MLAs and the councillors must take responsibility and take steps to prevent anti-social activities or increase police patrolling in vulnerable areas. Since the MLA, councillors and the MMC have not paid heed to our request, we have now decided to collect all garbage and empty beer bottles and dump it right outside the MMC building, so these councillors are reminded of our request on a daily basis,” said Polgi.
