Vasco based Social Activist Shalaka Kambli has pointed out hygiene issues pertaining to the vegetable market in Vasco. Kambli in a letter written to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday has demanded a permanent solution to prevent the daily dumping of vegetables waste in the market by vegetables vendors.
Speaking to the media, Kambli said that she had observed that there was no proper provision to dump vegetables waste in the market.
“As a citizen of Vasco, I wanted to highlight the unhygienic condition prevailing in the vicinity of Vasco vegetable market. The vegetable vendors dump the waste daily just inside the market premises at a spot next to a food outlet. Many vendors sit on the road next to this dump. The dump creates a stink and also attracts stray animals and insects. The MMC may be collecting this vegetable waste on a daily basis but the day the garbage is not collected, it creates a very unpleasant situation. This is also a health hazard,” said Kambli.
“During the Monsoons the situation n the market is pathetic. I have now written to MMC chief Officer, Dy Collector, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and Ward Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar to find a permanent solution to this issue. I have suggested that every vendor in the vegetable market be provide with a huge bin where he could dump his vegetable waste on a daily basis. This will stop mass dumping of vegetables waste in the market and also make it easy for the MMC to collect all the garbage from every vendor in a line. This will also make the market look neat and tidy. This move can also prevent stray cattles from coming to the market,” added Kambli.
