Sancoale Panchayat body has hailed the decision of Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha crackdown on illegal scrap yards operating at Zuarinagar in Sancoale area. The body also clarified that the scrapyards operating on the land filled sites had no approvals or permission of any sorts.
According to a source in VP Sancoale, the Panchayat has been receiving a lot of complaints of illegal scrapyards operating at Zuarinagar.
“The panchayat has been trying to remove the scrapyards and in the past it had issued a show cause notice to the scrapyard owners on two occasions. Many people had complained to the panchayat scrapyards were causing nuisance and some had even reported that stolen vehicles were being disposed in such illegal scrapyards. We are now shocked that they are operating on land filled sites. We are extremely grateful to our MLA Alina Saldanha for conducting a surprise inspection along with authorities to crack down on such scrapyards,” the source said.
“It is shocking to notice that the water bodies have been contracted due to land filling and the land is now being used for illegal scrapyards. We are sure Saldanha will take a strict action in this regards and the illegal scrapyards will be removed from our area,” the source added.
“The entire Communidade land is being usurped without any permission from the panchayat. Neither are they applying for a license or approval from the panchayat. Many people have comlpained that stolen vehicles are being disposed at these illegal scrapyards. The identity of the people who work in these places are not verified by the police, which is a dangerous situation. These scarpyards are also causing a lot of nuisance,” the source explained.
“I appreciate the efforts of our MLA Alina Saldanha for such a step and the scrapyards are operating without NOC from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), Fire Department pose a risk to public safety. The situation is grave as there is a chemical factory in close proximity to the scrapyards and in case of a fire, the consequences may be dire. The illegal scrapyards have also landfilled a nullah which could cause flooding in the remaining areas during monsoons. These scrapyards must be removed from there at all costs and we are sure Saldanha will inform all the necessary departments so that a strict action can be initiated,” the source concluded.
