Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Monday dashed off a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant urging him to put in all efforts to fight the culture of drugs not only in the coastal areas but also in the hinterland far away from the beaches.

He further said it is also imperative to take strict action against tourists who are not following the law of the land.

In his letter, Reginaldo drew the Chief Minister’s urgent attention to the raid by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on a rave party organised on the Goa-bound cruise ship.

“It is really despicable that this idea which tourists have that one can do whatever one wants in Goa has to be stopped immediately. Let us not forget the luxury cruise ship was headed to Goa and that the youngsters on whom narcotic drugs were found or who were consuming narcotic drugs were coming to Goa for a ‘drug trip’”, he said.

Reginaldo added: “From time to time, I have been raising the issue of sale of narcotic drugs in all parts of Goa both on the floor of the House of Goa Legislative Assembly and outside. We must stand in unison for our Goa and not let the drug culture finish our State . It is sad that the State government is not displaying its intent of eliminating the drug culture from Goa”.

Similarly, he said the State government had taken the decision to open up tourism after nearly a five-month hiatus imposed on account of the deadly second wave of Covid. “Tourists have not been found following SOPs issued by the MHA, be it wearing masks or observing social distancing. And the worst is that these tourists are not following rules and regulations of the State of Goa. It is given to understand that recently tourists were found driving on the beaches which causes destruction to the ecology and disturbance to other people visiting the beaches”, he stated in the letter.
