Hazard a guess who the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has deployed to treat the sewage generated in the part-commissioned South district hospital for the moment?
Well, in the absence of the commissioning of the hospital’s Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), the GSIDC has deployed night-soil tankers to empty the septic tanks every day till the STP is in place by September 10.
But a bigger problem stares at the GSIDC as the agency will have to find a way to dispose of the treated sewage for want of a dedicated sewer line passing by the hospital. While the new underground sewerage line is believed to have thrown up some problems, as the line has sunk along the District Collectorate’s stretch.
GSIDC officials said that the agency can use the treated water either for gardening and discharge the surplus treated water to the Sirvodem treatment plant.
A senior GSIDC official further said they will ascertain from the PWD (sewerage) whether the treated sewage water can be discharged into the old line passing behind the hospital.
For the moment, the GSIDC has deployed night-soil tankers, which have been making 10 trips on an average per day, transporting sewage from the hospital complex to the Sirvodem STP.
Senior GSIDC officials, however, said that the district hospital STP should fall in place by September 10 as the agency has approached the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to give consent to connect the hospital sewerage to the STP.
A senior official pointed out that the GSIDC will have no option, but to transport the surplus treated sewage water to the Sirvodem STP. “We have decided to utilize the treated sewage for gardening at the hospital complex. But there is going to be surplus treated water, which will have to be transported to the Sirvodem STP for want of a sewerage line passing by the district hospital,” a senior GSDIC official informed.
