The cold-blooded murder of city-based young goldsmith Swapnil Walke gave an armament to the opposition Congress and Goa Forward to fire ammunition at the ruling dispensation.
The ruling party, however, did not lag behind at taking potshots at Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat for trying to make capital out of the murder.
That’s not all. Party bigwigs led by BJP's all-powerful Organizing Secretary Satish Dhond descended on the murder site along with city leaders Rupesh Mahatme and Sharmad Raiturkar given that deceased Swapnil is the son of party’s seniormost leader Krishni Walke.
Dhond spoke to the district police chief Pankaj Kumar Singh for some time before leaving the place.
Later in the evening, BJP President SadanandTanavade, Damu Naik and other leaders were also seen at the site to take stock of the situation with Margao PI Sachin Narvekar.
Tanavade later told the media that what happened was bad and slammed the opposition for trying to politicise the issue. “They should not do politics over a murder. People of Margao are aware who has brought outside people in the city. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has issued instructions to the police to nab the culprits at the earliest. The Walke family should get justice. The Goa police are on the job to nab the culprits,” Tanavade said.
Both Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai had said the murder only reiterated their stand that there’s a complete collapse of the law and order situation in the state.
“I am completely devastated by the news of daylight stabbing of the young businessman from Margao Swapnil Walke at his jewellery shop. There is a complete collapse of law and order in the State. I demand immediate action in nabbing the murderers,” Kamat said.
Saying that Swapnil is the son of his close family friend and social worker Krishni Walke, Kamat prayed to the almighty to give her the strength to bear this shock. He appealed to the people to take precautions for their safety.
Goa Forward chief, MLA VijaiSardesai, has demanded that the government should nab the culprits and initiate action against the officials if the culprits are not brought to book.
He pointed out that the government should think of intensifying patrolling around the jewellery shops given that the goldsmiths community is a soft target. “What has happened in Margao on Wednesday noon is shocking. The government should immediately direct the officials to nab the culprits or initiate action against the officials,” he demanded.
Sardesai also advised the citizens at large to remain alert, especially when they go to the bank or hold a function, saying the security issue will always remain unattended.
