After the trust vote, Goa House meets today to elect speaker

The first session of the seventh Goa Legislative Assembly will reconvene on Wednesday with the election of the speaker, the sole business listed for the day.

The four-day session, including the day the Parrikar government won the vote of confidence on Thursday last, will see the Governor’s speech which is expected to outline the government’s policy and political direction. Also, figuring in the session will be the budget presented by Parrikar and the passing of the vote on account.  
Besides the election of the speaker, the legislative assembly will also agree on members of the panel of presiding members of the house for the year 2017-18.  
In a related development, the office of the speaker has recognised Chandrakant “Babu” Kavlekar as the Leader of Opposition with effect from March 21. The election of the speaker is expected to be a straight fight between the BJP-led coalition government’s nominee Pramod Sawant and the Congress nominee Aleixo Lourenço with Sawant expected to sail through in voting.

Ayodhya dispute: SC for out-of-court settlement

The Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested an out-of-court settlement of the lingering Ram Janmabhoomi- Babri Masjid land dispute at Ayodhya, observing that issues of “religion and sentiments” can be best resolved through talks.
