MARGAO: Government agencies descended at the Cavelossim-Mobor beach belt on Friday to collect and lift away the water hyacinth weed that has invaded the beach belt in the last couple of days.
A day after Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz sought help and assistance from government agencies and spoke to Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte and South district authorities over the emerging situation, workers were on the job to lift away the weed from the beach belt.
The Cavelossim Sarpanch said government agencies have shared photographs of workers engaged on the Cavelossim-Mobor beach belt to lift away the water hyacinth. “Since I was preoccupied with the Panchayat matters, I could not ascertain the work carried out by the workers to lift away the weed”, he said, adding that he along with Panchayat members will inspect the beach belt on Saturday.
Dixon along with panch member Jesus D’Costa inspected the Cavelossim-Mobor beach stretch and found to their horror how tons of the water hyacinth, which has been washed away from Margao has reached the river Sal at Cavelossim, besides the beach belt. “The water hyacinth has been washed away from Margao and has caused havoc at Cavelossim only goes to show the state of affairs of river Sal on the Margao stretch. What we need to restore River Sal’s pristine glory is action and not pledges and oaths for the restoration of the river”, Dixon assered.
