Agri min says sapling plantation is essential, not a political activity

Kavlekar was speaking at the launch of the weeklong Van Mahotsav programme by the Forest Department at Chapoli Dam in Canacona on Monday in the presence of Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes and Forest officers.

"Van Mahotsav is an important festival, and not a political one. Everyone should carry on with this activity by planting more saplings so as our State does not lag. We have not only doubled the MLA quota from 1,000 to 2,000 saplings but have also allotted 5,000 saplings each to North and South Zilla Panchayats, besides allotting 4,000 to each of our three MPs. More saplings can be allotted on if needed as well, but this year we should plant more fruits bearing trees," Kavlekar said after Forest Department took up plantations of different varieties of fruit-bearing saplings at Chapoli Dam, further stating that efforts are is being made to develop the state for Ecotourism. 

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker Fernandes said that despite planting thousands of saplings, little care is given to maintain their growth, he and called for proper maintenance once the plantation is carried out.

"I would have suggested putting the plantation in the names of each forest guard and official so that each plant is maintained till it is raised. Instead of putting our (politician's) names, put your guards' names, if that can help to maintain them and grow big," he said, further stating that the GFDC is also taking up beautification of the Chapoli Dam at Rs 2.5 crore.

Earlier, Deputy Conservator of Forests (South) Anil Shetgaonkar welcomed. Also present were the Deputy Conservator (Wildlife and Ecology) of Forest Premkumar, and other Range Forest Officers and officials.

Assistant Conservator of Forests, Canacona Vishant Survey proposed the vote of thanks, while the function was compered by RFO Canacona Anand Mestri.
