CMC lied about covering exposed garbage heaps at Dumane plant: RG

CANACONA

Stating that the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) conducted an eyewash of work done at Dumane Garbage Treatment Plant, Revolutionary Goans has stated that the municipality lied to the people that works of covering the exposed garbage at the GTP have been taken up.

According to a press note by Revolutionary Goans, a few days ago the municipality garbage plant at Dumane was making the headline. It was noticed that the plant was creating a garbage menace instead of resolving the waste issue. Since the garbage dump was uncovered and due to heavy rains, the leachate was flowing through the dump area and entered the river.

After Revolutionary Goans members Prashant Pagi and Sanjam Naique had highlighted the issue, the authorities soon informed that the issue has been taken care of and the garbage is covered, and even some media was provided with pictures of covered garbage.

"To reconfirm whether the issue is taken care of, RG members visited the spot again and found that it was a lie. The garbage wasn't covered and there was even more fresh garbage dumped. Stray dogs and cattle were also seen in the area. The strays were eating from the dump," adds the press note.

RG's Prashant Pagi has requested the authorities not to lie to the public: "If the work has not been done accept it, because this dump can create health issues, hence don't play with the lives of the public, and resolve the issue."

Incidentally, when asked about the reality, Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes said, "The reality is CMC, in spite of the need to do something, has done nothing to cover the open and exposed garbage."

Following reports of garbage issues and free flow of leachate into water bodies, CMC Supervisor Kanay Dessai on behalf of the municipality had submitted different photographs of tarpaulin-covered garbage heaps at the Dumane GTP stating action is being initiated to cover the entire dump.
