Mapusa councillors and locals stopped work on the Tar bridge on Monday, after accusing the contractor of proceeding with the construction work before removing debris from the river.
They claimed that the contractor had dumped debris in river during the construction work and had failed to remove it while proceeding ahead with the work.
Councillor Prakash Bhivshet and locals went to the site and stopped the construction work.
Representatives of the contractor claimed to have removed the stones, silt and other stuff from the river and requested them to allow the resumption of the work, which was rejected.
Bhivshet and other locals then said a joint inspection should be conducted on or after July 10 to inspect the debris during the low tide.
In the afternoon, MMC Chairperson Shubhangi Vaingankar, Vice-Chairperson Chandrashekhar Benkar, councillor Prakash Bhivshet, Bastora Sarpanch Ranjit Usgaonkar and others also inspected the site.
Bhivshet notified Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza and Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo about the incident
Both the MLAs are reported to have directed the contractor to stop the work at the site immediately.
