A routine passenger screening at Dabolim Airport on Sunday exposed an alleged impersonation and cheating racket linked to a recruitment examination conducted at IIT Goa, leading to the registration of a criminal case against two Haryana residents.
Ponda police have booked Rakesh Daholiya, 29, and Ankit Singh, 23, both from Jind district in Haryana, after electronic gadgets suspected to have been used for unfair means in an examination were allegedly detected during security screening at the airport.
According to police, security personnel found electronic devices, Bluetooth earpieces, SIM cards and related equipment in the possession of the two men. The discovery raised suspicion and prompted further inquiry by authorities.
Ponda police said Daholiya has allegedly admitted during questioning that he had impersonated a candidate, Vikash Chander, and appeared for a recruitment examination on his behalf using electronic devices to gain an unfair advantage.
The examination was conducted on October 10 at the administrative block of IIT Goa located on the GEC campus at Farmagudi.
Police suspect the accused used sophisticated communication equipment to facilitate impersonation and cheating during the examination process. The seized devices have been attached and sent for further forensic examination.
The case was registered in the early hours of Sunday following a complaint lodged by the CISF unit stationed at Goa Airport. Ponda police then initiated an investigation into the alleged conspiracy and the role played by each of the two accused.
A case has been registered under Section 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to cheating by impersonation.
Police are also expected to verify the circumstances under which the candidate's identity was allegedly misused and whether similar attempts were made in other examinations.
