The gram sabha decided to write to the Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary expressing its strong opposition to the nationalization of rivers in the State.
Proposing the resolution, a resident of Aldona, Savio Figuieredo said with nationalization, Goa will have no control over its rivers and the fishing community will be the worse sufferers. He said apart from affecting the livelihood of fishermen, nationalization will also damage the ecology and cause harm to tourism.
"People who own land on the banks of a river will lose rights over their land, as their land will effectively remain under the control of the central government," Figuieredo said. Another local, Nicholas Dias informed that the fishing community will be allowed to use one particular type of net instead of various nets used by them now. A tributary of Mandovi River passes through the villages of Aldona constituency. Many locals reside alongside this tributary.
