Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira on Saturday said the focus was to rebuild a new market complex at the existing site, but cautioned that it will take some time before work on the project gets going.
He said the market issue has been taken up at the highest level of the government and along with the local panchayat, he has been following up on the matter getting some “ground clearances” for the project.
Ferreira also said a bypass road was not a priority for the people of the village although the present road is narrow at various stretches.
“Once work on the market project starts, I do not want it to be stopped. But we are on track for it. The panchayat has already started moving the file for the market. I am following it up and getting certain ground clearances. It is not something which can happen in two or three months. It will take some time,” Ferreira said.
The Aldona MLA was speaking to the media at the sidelines of a function to inaugurate an OPD at Quitla in Aldona. Aldona Health Officer Dr Roshan Nazareth was also present.
Continuing, Ferreira said one section of the people wanted to shift the market from the present site to Gavar which could help in building a bigger market complex but another section wanted to rebuild the market at the same site.
He admitted the existing market site was creating congestion but it was also important to see the convenience of the people.
“I think the immediate need is to rebuild this market. We will make certain provisions when we rebuild it. Even for parking, we will work out with the church for paid parking at Tarcena ground,” he said.
He also said that the market issue has been taken up at the highest level.
“The CM has assured all necessary help to make the market a reality,” he said.
The current market building has developed wide cracks on walls while the plaster of the ceiling has been falling at several places.
It may be recalled the Engineering College of Farmagudi after conducting a study submitted a report detailing that the structure was weak and dangerous for human use.
According to the Aldona MLA, constructing a bypass road was not something that the people of the village were very enthused about.
He said even during the (assembly) election it was not included in his manifesto simply because a new road was not a priority for the locals.
“Secondly, the government must have funds to do that. And I don’t want to promise things which are not of priority for the people. It’s not what I want but what people want. For the people of Aldona, the road is not a priority,” he said.
