Alert villagers of Loutolim apprehended some persons who had come to unload a truckload of waste in the village in the wee hours of Friday.
The Maina-Curtorim police arrested four persons and later released them on bail.
The incident occurred at around 2.30 am when two vehicles arrived at the spot, including a Maruti van and a truck, which were fully loaded with plastic bags containing wet waste emanating foul smell and spilling leachate.
In his complaint, Loutolim Sarpanch Tony Vaz stated that the villagers apprehended two persons, besides the driver of the truck, before the vehicle could unload the waste.
On questioning, the persons confessed that they were all employees of a garbage contractor involved in collecting and disposing of door-to-door waste in Sancoale. The Sarpanch said it was learnt that waste collected from Sancoale was being regularly disposed of at the site in Loutolim.
He demanded that the police register an FIR under the relevant provisions of the IPC against the culprits and more importantly against the contractor as per the law in force.
