Alert neighbours came to the rescue to help douse a fire in a locked flat at Junta Quarters in Baina on Tuesday morning .
According to reports, a flat owned by Vinayak Mahindrakar caught fire when a lamp (Diya) placed on the altar reportedly fell.
Sources said no one was present in the flat and the gallery caught fire, which caught the attention of the neighbours.
Alert neighbours then informed the fire services and the flat owners. In a bid to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas, neighbours broke open the door and tried to douse the fire. In the meantime a fire brigade from Vasco also rushed to the site. Ward councillor Deepak Naik also visited the site to take stock of the situation.
“Most fire incidents in the recent past have been because of lamps placed on altars. We appeal to people to be careful while lighting a diya, especially when there is no one in the house,” said Naik.
Vasco Fire Officer Francisco Mendes said they received a call at around 11 am. “The alert neighbours, who broke the door, helped the firefighters to douse the fire.”
