The forging of an alliance with the Goa Forward Party could prove to be detrimental to the Congress, feels Former State Election Commissioner Prabhakar Timble.
"By forming the alliance, Congress has allowed GFP and Sardesai to position themselves on an elevated plane. Though the arrangement may work in favour of Kamat, it may turn out to be a loss for Congress in the run up for assembly elections as it sends coloured perceptions about the Congress with the Goa electorate," he said.
According to him, public perception plays a vital role in assembly elections. Sardesai has nothing to lose in the assembly elections, as the party organization is not different from him. But in case of Kamat who is a staunch Congress leader, such things tend to belittle the party organisation and put it in poor light before the electorate.
The civic polls was an opportunity for the Congress to test its political waters in Fatorda. Instead, by forming an alliance, the Congress appears to be telling the people that it has given up on the Fatorda seat in favour of the Sardesai, he said.
In his opinion, if the only reason was to keep the BJP away from power in the Margao Council, that could have been achieved by coming together of elected councillors post-poll rather than making a grandiose announcement with such fanfare.
