The Ambelim gram sabha on Sunday has adopted a resolution to install a statue of former Opposition Leader, Dr Jack Sequeira, popularly known as the Father of Opinion Poll, in the village.
After the gram sabha meeting, social activist Anthony D’Silva, who had moved the proposal to the panchayat as well as Velim MLA Cruz Silva and other authorities in the recent past, told the media that the panchayat has unanimously adopted the resolution to Dr Jack Sequeira’s statue in the village.
He further pointed out that the resolution has called upon the panchayat to install the statue on the land owned by the local body.
“We had identified two sites for the proposed installation of Jack Sequeira’s statue, one in front of the panchayat ghar and the other site at the SP hall, Ambelim. It has been finally decided to install the statue on the panchayat land near the SP, hall, Ambelim,” he said.
Saying the gram sabha members have set in motion the process towards the installation of Jack Sequeira’s statue, D’Silva said the ball now lies in the court of the Ambelim panchayat and Velim MLA Cruz Silva to take the resolution to its logical conclusion.
“We have proposed Jack Sequeira’s statue in Ambelim for his rich contribution during the Opinion Poll movement. Secondly, there’s no statue installed anywhere in South Goa in honour of the former Opposition leader,” he added.
