Anganwadi gutted in fire at Mapusa; elderly woman injured

MAPUSA
An elderly woman was injured after a room given on rent to an Anganwadi was gutted in a fire at Khorlim-Mapusa in the wee hours of Thursday.

The Anganwadi was running in the rental room in the house belonging to Nisha Korgaonkar, (75).

The fire broke out at around 4 am and the Korgaonkar family alerted the police and fire services.

Nisha Korgaonkar sustained burn injuries while trying to extinguish the fire. She was shifted to the District Hospital and later referred to the Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital at Bambolim, where she is undergoing treatment.

A fire tender dispatched could not reach the site in quick time due to the narrow access road.

All items in the Anganwadi such as furniture, medicines, food and pulses, was destroyed in the fire, causing a loss of about Rs 1 lakh.

Mapusa Police conducted the panchanama and is investigating the incident.
