The Goa Forward party has supported the All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association in their endeavour to secure GI tags for coconut products feni, jaggery and vinegar, with party chief Vijai Sardesai saying the GI certification can protect the reputation and distinctiveness of these products at both national and international levels.
He said GI certification will not only grant legal protection against unauthorised imitation but also provide a significant marketing advantage.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary to initiate the necessary steps to commence the process for obtaining GI tags for coconut feni, coconut jaggery, and coconut vinegar, Sardesai said government’s support in this matter will not only preserve the cultural heritage but also promote these products in the global market place.
“I sincerely hope that the government of Goa takes prompt action to facilitate this initiative, and I look forward to hearing about the progress in this regard. It’s my expectation that with your support, we can celebrate and safeguard these treasured elements of Goan culture for generations to come,” he stated.
Referring to the request made by the All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association to the government to pursue Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the three distinct products; Coconut Feni, Coconut Jaggery, and Coconut Vinegar, Sardesai said, “These products are intricately linked to our cultural identity and heritage, I believe it is essential that we extend our full support to their request.”
He added: “The significance of these products cannot be overstated. They are not only deeply rooted in our history but also symbolize our close association with the coconut tree, which holds the esteemed position of being our state tree. The coconut tree, often referred to as the “Tree of Life”, is an integral part of our Goan identity and traditions”.
