A group of councillors, residents and activists have voiced anger over the construction of a road at Caranzalem beach and have demanded the immediate halt of the work.
“There was a footpath which is now being converted to a big road,” complained former mayor Uday Madkaikar.
Former mayor and sitting corporator Surendra Furtado said he was shocked to note that a large road is being made directly to the beach over the current weekend for the benefit of a resort at Caranzalem beach by destroying the natural ecosystem.
“Have permissions from GZMA, CCP and PDA been obtained? Why is the flying squad not taking cognizance of this illegal weekend activity,” asked Furtado and alleged that attempts may be made to protect the work.
Local activist Shailendra Velingkar alleged that many trees have been felled for the construction of the road and added that some hoteliers want the road access for their benefit.
Tony Fernandes and Uday Madkaikar have filed complaints in the matter.
