The locals are believed to have given a sound thrashing for the man before the Margao police descended at the spot. Tension rent the air after the mob stopped the police from taking custody of the man as he lay unconscious on the ground.
The people refused to allow the police to take custody of the man, who is believed to be hailing from Sanvordem, demanding that the Margao police had in the past failed to initiate action against the culprit. Parents and relatives of the girl questioned the police how they could not prevent the man from meting out harassment to the girl despite past complaints. They demanded to know whether the police is willing to take responsibility if the man makes his presence felt at the girl’s house or her work place again.
Margao Municipality ward councillor Tito Cardozo explained to the police that the people of the locality are agitated since the man had been harassing the girl and her family.
It was only after the police assured that they would patrol near her house and ensure the man does not harass her further, the police were given possession of the person, who was later rushed to Hospicio for medical examination.
