Chaos prevailed in Sancoale on Monday morning after a large crowd of residents confronted the staff of a gas cylinder dealer over a shortage of gas in cylinders.
As the crowd began increasing, the driver, cleaner and the loaders abandoned the vehicle and fled from the site.
The incident happened when one resident sensed that the gas cylinder was light and raised an alarm, prompting other residents to check for the weight using a scale available.
Later as people gathered to check all cylinders in the truck, the workers sensed the growing anger among the residents and fled from the spot.
Residents later alerted the legal metrology department and a team rushed to the site and began investigating the weight of the cylinders.
The legal metrology team led by Nitin Purushan said the department had attached 13 cylinders and confirmed that some cylinders had been underweight to the tune of up to 3.2 kgs.
The residents claimed that the gas cylinder agency would supply the cylinders after the males in the house had left for work since women in the house would not bother to check for the weight of the cylinders.
They alleged that the gas pilferage may have been taking place for a long time.
"We randomly checked and realised that many cylinders are underweight and we have now requested authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and take necessary action.”
“Some cylinders have seals opened and we decided to address the issue after being united in deciding to act on the underweight of the cylinders," said a resident.
