Acting tough against loud music, Bardez Deputy Collector and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kapil Phadte has issued show-cause notices to 20 hotels, nightclubs, discotheques, bar and restaurants along the coastal belt of Anjuna.
The action came after an alert resident of Assagao, Desmond Alvares, wrote to the deputy collector and other authorities against the noise pollution created by the nightclubs by playing music beyond the permissible limit.
“The villagers of Assagao/Anjuna and surrounding villages are aggrieved by the violation of the noise pollution rules and regulations by the various hotels, bars, restaurants on the beaches situated mainly in Anjuna and which can be heard loud and clear in the surrounding villages of Assagao and nearby area in violation of the Noise Pollution (Regulations & Control) Rules, 2000,” Alvares said in his memorandum to the authorities.
He also said the music which starts at sunset continues till the wee hours the next day and for all 365 days of the year.
The Assagao resident said the authorities concerned grant licenses to the hotels and the nightclubs with recommendations from the police and the village panchayats to play amplified music with the stipulation that 55 decibels sound should be maintained, but actually they play much beyond the limit and the intensity of the sound was very loud. In his memorandum, Alvares also named several popular hotels and clubs, adding that Anjuna police had failed to take action against the hotels/clubs despite complaints.
“I have been receiving threats from these party organisers and an MLA’s son during the recent few days,” he said.
